Meet the man behind the business Matthew Haythorn founder and owner Precision Poured Concrete

I am from Chadderton originally and I moved to Milnrow where I still live today. When I was younger I wanted to be a pilot or in the police but sadly I didn’t get the opportunity as I am colour blind. It’s a good job concrete is grey!

I started out in retail running the long since gone homeware and DIY store Do It All. I then moved into recruitment and truck sales. Whilst working in recruitment I found my way into truck sales. During my time selling trucks where I had a great career I worked with a guy who had been over to the concrete show in Las Vegas the biggest one in the world and he had seen Volumetric mixers. He was ordering numerous trucks from me and fitting volumetric mixers to them all.

This continued for four years and it dawned on me that there was a big market as I watched the industry go from nothing to something big an industry on the up. This came at an ideal time when I was ready for a new challenge even though I was doing very well in truck sales. So I decided to bite the bullet and take a big risk and see if a friend and I could make it work with a volumetric truck on our own. We got ourselves a truck and we worked day and night and we soon discovered we were onto something.

What do you enjoy most about owning Precision Poured Concrete?

We have a plant at the bottom of the yard which is used for when customers just come down to the yard and want concrete there and then. I love it having a good chat with the customers and doing it. I am a doer I don’t like sitting at a desk and all the stress that goes with it. I like making the blocks also that’s fun.

What is the best lesson you have learned in business?

Patience, less haste and more speed. Sometimes I can go at things a little too quickly and maybe I would be better off waiting.

What have you seen change within the industry since you started?

When we first started it was all about Volumetrics and as the industry has evolved and competitors have grown. The rate of price per cube has dropped due to competitiveness and has become more difficult over the to ensure we can remain to offer value for money and honest practices which we are proud of.

Why are you different to your competition?

We have a huge respect for our competitors and it motivates us to not only improve our own skills but work alongside them to fulfill requests. Our local knowledge and industry knowledge combined is what I think makes us stand out. We are constantly evolving our business to keep up to date with industry changes and ahead of the curve introducing new technology to best serve our customers. It is important that we invest in new technology to be able to give our customers the best value for money and customer service.

We pride ourselves on being a local firm who service local people no matter how big or small the job is as well as national projects. We are currently supplying to the regeneration of Rochdale town centre project which we are incredibly proud to be part of. It will see the town flourish for years to come and as a local man employing local people we take great pride in this. You can read more about this project here.

What is the strangest request you have ever had from a customer?

We once made a concrete plinth for a Nike advert. We received a phone call from a company asking us to make a concrete plinth for a Nike advert featuring Wayne Rooney that was a pretty odd request.

Where do you see the future of Precision Poured Concrete?

We have got the business to where I wanted. I have a great team who work hard and love working with our customers. There will come a time when I will step aside and spend my days on the golf course but it won’t be for a while yet as I love doing what I do and would miss working with our customers. No two days are the same and I think I would be bored. So I will be continuing moving the business forward introducing new technologies to be able to provide our customers with the best value.
